Funded places
Free Nursery Education Places The Government gives funding to local authorities to provide free part time nursery education places for all 3 and 4 year olds. Your child will be entitled to claim a maximum of 5 free sessions, (a session is classified as 2 ½ hours) per week during term time. Funded sessions are available for 38 weeks of the years. You are entitled to claim just for your free entitlement or you can extend childcare by making a small contribution to the nursery of your choice. Generally speaking, your child will be eligible for funding the term after they turn three. Funding will then continue until your child starts school.
How do I register for a free nursery place?
You will need to book a place for your child at a setting of your choice. Once your child is eligible and has been registered, the setting will claim the funding for your child and the money will be paid directly to them.
Can I claim more than 1 session in any one day?
A child may attend morning and afternoon sessions and therefore claim their full entitlement over two and a half days. Two sessions is the maximum per day and they must be separated by a natural break, usually lunch. Children can also stay at the setting for lunch and pay a small charge to the setting.
Can I book my child into more than 1 setting?
Yes, but you can only claim for a maximum of 5 sessions per week in total. You decide how you wish to allocate your funded sessions between the settings.
What happens if my child attends more than 5 sessions per week?
You will be expected to pay for any additional sessions. Speak to your chosen childcare provider about their charges.
Can I also claim tax credits?
Yes, you just need to let them know how much you are currently paying towards childcare during the year. Funding can affect the childcare element as you cannot receive for the hours in which you are receiving the Nursery Education Funding.
Tax credit
Paid directly to parents/carers by Inland Revenue.
You may be eligible to claim for tax credits as 9 out of 10 families with children are entitled to receive tax credits. The main tax credits for families are Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit and these can make a significant difference to you and your family.
Please visit the HM Revenue and Customs website where you will be able to find details of eligibility and details of the changes to these tax credits that will apply as of April 2007.
